Northern Land Council (NLC) engaged Captovate to develop five comprehensive eLearning packages aimed at Rangers. 

The primary focus of these modules was to provide training grounded in real-world scenarios, tailored to the unique responsibilities and challenges faced by NLC staff. We utilised core resources provided by the client and took a culturally aware approach, incorporating hand-drawn Indigenous characters and real Indigenous voices to ensure authenticity and relatability.

Project Goals

The primary objectives of this project were to:


  • Deliver culturally appropriate and engaging learning experiences.
  • Provide essential training to Rangers in key operational and ethical areas.
  • Use authentic scenarios to reinforce the learning experience and increase retention.

Content and Design

The eLearning modules covered topics essential for Ranger duties and NLC staff responsibilities, including:


  • Chainsaw Training: Safety and operational procedures.
  • Vehicle and 4WD Safety: Guidelines on the correct and safe use of vehicles in diverse environments.
  • Code of Conduct: Detailed training on ethics and responsibilities, incorporating simulated tasks like completing conflict of interest forms.
  • Fire Planning: outlined the role Rangers take in back burning and fire safety.
  • WHS and Hazards: Outlining the role WHS plays in keeping a workplace safe.


We adopted a constructive learning approach, building case studies based on actual scenarios experienced by the NLC and its staff. These scenarios addressed essential issues such as the dual role of being a traditional owner and an NLC employee, and possible conflicts of interest like receiving gifts and benefits or hiring and commissioning family members.

Engaging Learning Experience

To ensure high engagement and effectiveness, we:


  • Hand-drew Indigenous Characters: Adding a personalised, culturally relevant visual touch.
  • Used Authentic Indigenous Voices: Ensuring that learners felt a connection with the content and identified with the scenarios presented.
  • Designed Custom Graphics: Supporting the learning materials, especially for technical and procedural topics like chainsaw operation and vehicle usage.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Captovate ensured the learning packages were inclusive by providing:


  • Guided Instructions: Clear directions on how to navigate and utilise the modules effectively.
  • Closed Captions and Scripts: Including notes to cater to all learning styles and accessibility needs.

Outcome

The final learning packages successfully combined culturally appropriate elements with practical training. By grounding the content in real scenarios, the modules resonated with Rangers and staff, offering them not just knowledge but practical tools to manage their responsibilities effectively. The constructive learning approach also empowered them to critically analyse their roles and responsibilities within the NLC.


Captovate’s approach demonstrated the importance of combining authenticity with practical instruction. By using hand-drawn characters, real voices, and genuine scenarios, we created a compelling learning experience that equipped NLC Rangers with the knowledge and skills they needed, while respecting their unique cultural context.
