Creating positive community engagement and participation through social media

Overview

When West Arnhem Regional Council launched their Instagram page, they needed guidance on strategic direction and how to best engage the community.

They needed clarity on who their audience is, their pain points and the types of content they are likely to engage with. West Arnhem also needed to understand how to intertwine this with their own organisational goals.

The approach

Captovate ran a workshop with the marketing and communications team from West Arnhem Regional Council, with the goal of showing the council how to make the most of Instagram.

We workshopped the different needs within the community, and how West Arnhem's Instagram page could serve those needs through meaningful content.

Community needs and how West Arnhem can serve them:

  • Foster collaboration and inclusion - share positive community stories
  • Meaningful participation and change - Give the community a voice by using the platform to ask for feedback and opinions
  • Respect - Share stories, events and activities that the community is proud of, and celebrate West Arnhem/Yolgnu culture
  • Hope - Tell the community about projects that will improve the lives of residents, such as funding from the NTG to fund the Maningrida Youth Strategy.

By creating positive community engagement through social media, West Arnhem increase confidence in council decision making and drives meaningful participation among residents.

website refresh

Along with the social media strategy, Captovate worked with the Council to update their website, ensuring it meets current digital standards and better serves its users.

The project involved upgrading the site from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, providing improved functionality, security, and long-term sustainability.

The upgrade placed particular emphasis on improving mobile accessibility, reflecting the growing need for seamless access across all devices. Key features such as the event calendar were also enhanced, simplifying the process for users to access information about council events and services.

The updated website incorporates a refreshed design that highlights the region's distinctive identity. Stunning imagery and branding elements were integrated to reflect the deep cultural and environmental significance of West Arnhem, creating a design that aligns with the council’s values and community ties.
